Local 393's heritage of excellence is the product of our commitment towards achievement. We have long invested into our Apprenticeship instruction and have further enhanced our demand for excellence via our Journey Level training. In 1961, Local 393 opened the Pipe Trades Training Center.
The original training center had but one classroom and a welding shop. Today, the Pipe Trades Training Center is housed in a state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot facility located at 780 Commercial Street in San Jose. The Training Center has 48 classrooms and offers a full palette of Journey Level classes. Affiliated with Foothill Community College, the Training Center offers a program that is accredited through the Division of Apprenticeship Standards of the State of California.
More than 70 instructors bring first-rate credentials and extensive field experience to the classroom. Most are United Association members currently working in the field. Others are from the chemical, electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering industry.
Each instructor shares a commitment to teaching and learning based on individual student needs. Instructors attend special courses provided by the UA Instructor Training Program to stay current with changes in the industry. They have spent the last several years working with the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) to create first class curriculum that extends down to the level of daily lesson plans that include PowerPoint slides for every moment of class throughout the 5 years. In addition, our instructors create many of their own teaching materials, giving students up-to-the-minute, state-of-the-art information on codes, materials and processes not found in traditional textbooks.
